I have transported my rowing single on the top of my saab 9000 with just the standard thule bars ($99) and some pipe insulation ($0.30). As long as the vessel has flat gunwhales (sp?) that can support it, its easy. Cover the bars of the carrier with the pipe insulation (use tape $1). Now flip the canoe upside down and rest it on the bars. Get two of those cargo straps from EMS or REI ($10) and strap it down to the bars. You might need to tie a rope from the bow to the bumber to prevent it from flopping but I wouldn't see the need to do this for a canoe. BTW you can get the Thule carrier from your saab dealer (just the basic set of bars). BTW make sure that the wieght of your boat does not exceed the limits of the carrier.
