Subject: Heater/Overheating Problem

My '86 Saab 900 just had the head gasket replaced (twice). Now the heater blows cold air and the temp gauge goes way up when idling - everything is correct at highway speeds. The coolant level is between "Min" and "Max", although closer to "Min", and has remained stable since the head gasket was replaced 2 months ago. I verified that the driver's-side radiator fan works by connecting it directly to the battery. I couldn't get at the wiring to the other (A/C?) fan, but a bad fan would not explain the loss of heater output, anyway. I believe that the Saab's coolant circulates directly through the fill/overflow bottle. Is this true? The symptoms seem to indicate that the bottle is being sucked dry when the engine idles, starving both the engine and heater core of coolant. Any American car I ever saw has the overflow bottle attached as an appendage to the radiator cap, and its main purpose is to allow for expansion. I don't know how the Saab system works, if there are any special signs to look out for, etc. I do not remember any heater problems (or heat gauge problems) before the head gasket was replaced. Is it possible to put the gasket in backwards and cause this type of problem? If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Please email me at neiltoznopsamcom. Thanks. WWJD?
