Subject: Re: Blown Head Gasket question

Make sure any defects in the head are correctly repaired! I just had the head gasket replaced in my Saab 900 in January. Coolant was getting into the cylinder. The mechanic said that his machine shop told him that there was a "slight deterioration" that he fixed with a epoxy compound. It only cost $25.00, but the end result was the head still leaked and had to be replaced again. The total cost was about $1200.00! I had to make arrangements with a good machine shop (capable of welding the "slight deterioration" - actually they sent it to a welding sub-contractor). This shop cost $130.00. If I had paid the extra $105.00 in the first place, I would have saved about $600.00. Good Luck
