Subject: Power Steering noise in '93 Saab 900SE

Hello, I have recently purchased a manual '93 SAAB 900SE with 112,000 miles on the clock and a good service history. The power steering emmits a noise starting, after the car has travelled 5 or 6 miles from cold, whilst cornering. The noise does not disappear even after a long journey and is quite irritating !. A sharp bend is not required to induce this noise, it also appears when the car is stationary and the steering wheel is turned. There are no actual problems with the steering. I am led to believe that some kind of noise is normal in the power steering of these cars. I have sought several opinions on this. One Saab dealer told me such a noise is fairly normal in these models and is nothing to worry about, another told me the noise is excessive and that the problem lies with either, the steering rack or the power steering pump. An independent Saab specialist could not accurately diagnose the source of the problem and recommended I take it no further. Both jobs will be expensive due to the cost of the parts required. I am reluctant to proceed with the work until the cause can be accurately identified. Has anyone else come across a similar problem and, if do, what was the solution ?. Thanks, Matthew Crump.
