Sounds like you've had some good experiences overall.
The degree of seriousness in the land of leaky head gaskets depends on where
the leak goes. If the leak is into the cylinders or other passages, it's very
bad; those are the cases where the car might overheat or mix coolant with oil
in the sump.
They're not uncommon in older Saabs, as the design of the gasket had something
to do with it. New gaskets have taken care of that particular problem.
In my case, the coolant leaked out of the engine, closest to cylinder #4. The
leak got bad enough that I finally had to just deal with it.
