i had a similar problem with my '86 900S. When I went to lift the trunk latch it would go up (the lever) almost all the way, sometimes it would open. I found that if I leaned on the trunk it would open better. If this is the case with yours, check the rubber spacers on each side of the trunk (if you can get it open), if they are too tight it causes the problem I described (I simply decreased the height of each spacer very slightly and it opens perfectly now).
