Anecdotally, there seems to be a belief that the synthetic is better at getting past older seals. On a newer car, this probably wouldn't be a problem. Personally, I have a hard time with the extended change intervals recommended by the synthetic folks. I still hold with 3000K miles, oil and filter, 10-15K miles, tranny drain and fill. Landlocked in Utah, dreamin' of the Islands...
