The best manual is the one published by Bentley, available at your Saab dealer for about US$40. The Haynes is usable, but limited. Each covers some things that the other doesn't. A lot of folks keep the Haynes in the trunk, the Bentley in the garage. Some folks buy the actual Saab shop manual in sections, as needed. If you have some mechanical ability, there are many things you can do yourself, depending on how involved/dirty you want to get. You need a good set of metric and standard sockets, both regular and deep, Torx drivers/sockets as needed (there aren't many of these fasteners, but you can't use anything else on them), a good digital multimeter. A Mity Vac is handy for many things, as so much of the engine functions are vacuum driven/controlled. Repairs are pretty straight-forward, and there's plenty of help here as well as at http://nospam.com/turbo/ and http://www.saabnet.com I just realized that you didn't mention what year your Saab is? Everything I've said applies to the '85 model and the years around that. I have no experience with the "new generation" 900s or 9000s. Hope this helps. Landlocked in Utah, dreamin' of the Islands...
