Subject: Re: ?auto cooling fan:HELP!!

I have fixed allot of these. The 2.1 non turbo 900's 91 - & some 89 -90's had a factory bulletin on : 1. Changing the cooling fan relay and rewiring its connection points so both fans work when the thermal fan switch tells the fans to turn on. Having two fans do the job is like a airplane with two engines. This was a bad move on the part of Saab as its older 900's utilized both fans. The 2.1 has a head gasket weakness in the lower area of Cyl#1. Then to top it all off Saab eliminated the duel fan function. Folks If I was you Id make darn sure you have the duel fan function and make sure the cooling system is 100%. Change your thermostat, "use a 82 Deg C Genuine Saab or German equalivance" at every Major Service. Other trick is to replace your thermal fan sensor with a 82 Deg C unit. This alone will keep your Temp down while sitting in traffic. The less movement you have in that Temp meter after you reach operating Temp the better off the head gasket is. 2. The Fan time limit relay also has a bulletin as it is weak part. The bulletin says to replace the Fan Time Relay with a standard relay thus eliminating the time function. This time relay limited the amount of time the fan at the radiator ran when you turned the Saab off, on real hot days. 3. Many of the old 900's have the same type relay "black box located just above the air filter. If this puppy fails ...... The fans will stay on all the time or WORST ......Your fans will not come on at all and the engine will fry. We have all these tricks in our Technical Documents area at http://townsendimports.com Tom Townsend <SAABTECH>
