Subject: Re: Turbo wastegate question.......

I suspect what you mean to ask about is replacing the turbo bypass valve, not the wastegate. The bypass valve (aka hooter valve) allows the pressure in the intake manifold to be released when you lift off the throttle. The stock setup routes the vented pressure back in to the intake. The Abbott dump valve and the HKS Super Sequential blow off valve vent the pressure to the atmosphere. There is a difference between the Abbott and the HKS. The Abbott uses a simple rubber (kevlar?) diaphragm and a choice of springs to release the backpressure. The HKS uses two vacuum operated valves with an adjustment screw to choose the pressure release. The HKS is far superior in design, construction and operation, IMO. I had an incorrectly assembled Abbott dump valve on my '97 SETC (running ~18 psi of boost, with the Abbott Trionic). I believe the fault contributed to the premature failure of my turbo at only 25k miles. I'm back to the stock bypass valve, and will install an HKS Super Sequential before long. The only benefit of the Abbott dump valve is that it is a straight bolt in. The HKS requires welding a mounting flange onto the intercooler pipe (or somewhere in the intake system). In either case, you will see reduced turbo lag, particularly on upshifts, not so much in accelerating from a stop in first gear. As far as your warranty, I'm not sure. Check with your dealer's service manager and see what they say. If there's any doubt in your mind, retain the ability to restore your car to stock, in the event of any related warranty service. ;) Buy the HKS.
