Ian,
I've got a '97 900 SE convertible with: Saab sport exhaust, Abbott Trionic and
Abbott springs. I am VERY happy with the performance of the car now. I can whup
most BMWs, stock American muscle cars, Boxsters, etc. in acceleration, and out
drive most on rotaries and twisties. Over the winter I was ice racing with the
BMW club and frequently had better times than BMWs on ice tires, vs my Saab on
snows. I've lost highway races from 10=>110mph only to a 911 and Nissan 300ZX
twin turbo, though not by too much. Dan Saarony at ARM in Ontario advised
against the new shocks for everyday street driving. IMO the cylinder head is not
going to be of much value in everyday driving either, its benefit is most
obvious at high RPM. I do covet the LSD, but the cost is quite high, and with
the improved suspension, isn't as necessary as you might think Over exuberant
launches will spin the tires in first, and chip 'em in 2nd & 3rd, but the
longitudinal stiffness of the new suspension makes a tremendous difference. The
brake/wheel/tire upgrade probably is quite good, although I've never had an
issue with the stock brakes. My fear would be the effect on ride quality of the
plus 2 wheel/tire combo. Though that may just be my prejudice, living in New
England where the roads are FAR from perfect.
If you're looking for and all out street racer, Saab may not be the best choice
for you. If you're looking for a great high speed cruising sports coupe (or
sedan) with loads of room, and gobs of passing power, the Saab 2.0l turbo with a
few upgrades really fits the bill, IMO.
If you've got any more specific questions, email me directly.
