Gary, Your car has *two* timing chains - one drives the camshafts, the other drives the balance shafts. If your local garage isn't aware of this simple fact, I'd take the car elsewhere! Anyhow, don't know what the wear patterns are like (never owned a 2.3 (yet)), but you might need to replace both, at considerable expense. I'd have someone who is familiar with the Saab 2.3 motor look it over...
