Non-obvious connection to check - lambda (O2) sensor connection, behind the false bulkhead (and in front of main one) under the cover over the wiper mechanism, ECU etc. Not having this causes major idle fluctuations, but probably also a check engine light. Another thing to try is contact cleaner, I had similar problems solved (eventualy) by using spray contact cleaner on the air mass meter plug, even though there wasn't any visible corrosion.
