You can also get 'white' smoke when the turbocharger starts to go. Does it smell like steam or like hydrocarbons? In either event, it's not a cheap repair, but is justifiable if the rest of the car is in good shape. Went thru the same series of symptoms with my '85 900T, from occasional to more and more constant, and it was the turbo; luckily I had a used spare.
