At least the local crash inspector at the insurance company I use told me that Saabs are among the safest cars he's come across (and he doesn't drive a Saab himself). He's been doing that job for over 20 years, so he's come across quite many demolished cars and injured people. I myself would go for a pre -93 Classic 900. It's chassis is very simply but well put together, the car is safe and looks good :).
