Intercooling is the process of cooling charged air coming out of the turbo before it enters the throttle body. Water-cooling the turbo is a process of running coolant around the turbo to keep its operating temperature down. Earlier Saab turbos were oil-cooled only. In '87, 9000 turbos went to water-cooled, but all 9000Ts were intercooled. In '88, 900 turbos went to water-cooled, but they were intercooled since the introduction of the 16v in '85 for sure (in the U.S). -Doug
