I had a similar problem in an '85 900T I used to own, turned out that the front engine mount had had it. The shift linkage although lined up when standing still, under braking or acceleration the car would not shift well, especially 5th and under heavy acceleration would pop straight out of 5th, very disconcerting. New engine mounts fixed it right up...
