Subject: SAAB 9000 Alternator

It looks as if my alternator is on the way out......The voltmeter sometimes reaches 13.5 V (New battery) but often hangs around 11.9 V until I get the car up to about 60mph on the motorway, at which point it jumps quickly to 13.5 - most of the time! A few days ago the car stalled as I was turning into the garage, and refused to start - the battery didn't even hve enough juice to turn the starter motor. Car started fine with a booster pack, then promptly stalled again when I took my foot off the accelerator. A few weeks ago I repaired the air vane for the cabin heating system, which required the removal of all the facia switches etc etc. When I tried the car in the drive at LOW speed, the negative cable jumped off the battery, so I suspect that's the cause of the alternator problem? Prices here in Spain for a new BOSH alternator (Code 0120469684) range from 53,000 pesetas to 178,000 pesetas (150 pesetas to the US dollar) Does any one have any ideas about what the problem may be (Loose belts, voltage regulator etc.) or does anyone know of a cheap source for a new or rebuilt alternator? Thanks very much! -- Peter and Myra Pearse Urbanizacion Monsacro Chalet 20 33126 Santa Eulalia de Morcin Asturias, Spain 98 578 3454
