Thanks for the advice everyone. I actually forgot to mention in my original post that the thermostat was changed just a couple of weeks before the incident at the last service - making it even more likely IMHO that it was to blame since I've never had any sign of overheat or getting hot before. Of course the main dealer said it was inconceivable that the thermostat was to blame and changed the fan thermo switch (though I reckon they probably shoved a new thermostat in as well just to be on the safe side). Good news is that it's OK now (31 degrees C today) and the head wasn't damaged. They also changed the aux. drive belt and tensioner. Gee that's one expensive part (US$ 250 !!). I wonder whether it really needed changing (car has done 33000 K).... Anyway thanks again !
