Unrelated to your problem, though, it would be good to put some Barr's Leaks in your coolant. It will not only stop most leaks but will also lubricate your water pump bushing. It doesn't touch the coolant at all. I'm not sure, but I'd wager that it is nothing more than a float. When coolant is at the proper level, it floats up; when not, gravity pulls it down.
