Subject: Transmission help please!! and possible auto to man swap on 9000

Hello to all. I owned an '85 900 which I truely enjoyed and when the time came to replace it (almost 300K miles on it), I decided to try a 9000. I purchased this car with 155K on it... it seemed to have been well taken care of and runs great, however, so far it has not been the best purchase of my life. It left me stranded about a month ago and has sat in my driveway ever since. As I still make payments on it, I am trying to decide what to do with it. Right after the one month warrantee ran out, the symptoms I encounted prior to failure was abrupt shifting in and out of 3rd gear to the point I was doing to manually to avoid the hard clunk it made. I changed the fluid and filter, which seemed to help initially, but then the shifting got worse... it would "hang" in first gear for roughly the first 2-3 mins on the road and not always engage reverse. Finally the day it failed, it seemed to be slipping in all gears, and then would only move a few feet at a time, after stopping and starting the engine. I can still move it a few feet now, but that is all. So, having encountered what many people have... a failure of the automatic transmission on my 1989 9000S, and after finding out a rebuilt one is close to 2000$ and a new one is over 3000$.... I am looking at few other options to decide from: 1) Used tranny from a parts yard... approx 800$ with only a 90 day warrantee... which does not inspire confidence with that amount of money spent 2) Used tranny from a "parts car" if and when I can find one with a good tranny within a reasonable distance from Massachusetts 3) A swap to a manual transmission..... 4) Remove the existing one and rebuild it, but I understand the parts are not all available from Saab, hense the high prices of these units to replace. Can anyone provide me insight as to which way to go with this car.. Has anyone tried to do an auto to manual swap... what were the trouble areas? Also, has anyone rebuilt an auto unit on their own? I have a lot of mechanical expertise (ex jet engine mechanic in the military) and could probably do the job with a little guidence to avoid the trouble areas and **if** the parts were available. Thank you for any help you can offer... I am driving an old rusty VW Fox in the interim....... :-( -Steve (still wanting to be a proud Saab owner, but finding it tough right now)
