The shifter linkage is out of adjustment. This could be from normal wear and tear. However, there was a recall (296?) that addressed this issue. If it has not been done on this car, that is where I would start. Also the shifter linkage was redesigned for the 97? model year. The linkage can be retrofitted to the earlier cars, but it requires cutting a mounting boss off the trans case. It is not a bad job, but for a novice, it could be tough. Also the linkage is not cheap (about $200.00, I think) 2. Reverse gear in the trans is worn out. Unfortunately, this is common problem. The repair requires trans R&R and tear down. Depending of the car VIN, there are updated parts. The big worry is that the gears that came off the reverse gear went somewhere else in the trans and did more damage. The standard warranty for the car was 4years/50K miles, so the car is out of warranty. Saab does pay for the parts and labor for the timing belt ONLY!!! sjcrowenopsams.com
