Subject: 1991 900i Convertible Problems

I have had a 1991 900i saloon for some 7 years and have been totally happy with all aspects of the car which has now done 190,000 miles. Some months ago I saw a convertible version of the same model and age with 87,000 miles and was so taken with it that I purchased it and gave the old saloon to my partner. The convertible is an absolute dog compared with the saloon and inferior in all respects. It has been back to the dealer many times to have rectification work done under warranty but it is still a pig to drive. Some of the things that I find depressing are ; (1) The ride quality - it is choppy and hard compared to the saloon. I notice that the tyres fitted are Michelin Radial 185/65 R15 88T which are not featured in the handbook. Does anybody know these tyre types and could they be contributing to the harsh ride quality? (2) A lack of engine responsiveness compared with the saloon - could this be due to the extra weight of the stiffening? (The dealer swears that all ignition settings are to spec.) (3) When slowing down on a trailing throttle the car seems to 'hunt' - i.e. it tends to jerk. Again, the dealer has replaced various carb bits but still the problem persists. (4) It is impossible to drive smoothly due to throttle jerkiness. Unless the throttle is pressed lightly at all speeds there is a jerk as the power is fed in. (Dealer reports no problem found.) (5) Gear change is lumpy and obstructive and if reverse is not selected before the engine is switched off then getting reverse is usually a problem - requiring that the engine is switched on again to allow reverse to be selected. (Dealer reports that clutch has 50% life left but did replace some small linkage bit which is required to allow for LHD build. He did state that a longer link was twisted but did not feel that it was worth replacing.) In short - I wish that (a) I had not assumed that the convertible would be just as good if not better than the old saloon, (b) taken a full day to test drive the car and (c) not been taken with its looks. Yes - it is a striking car and a joy to drive with the hood down but other than that it is a pain in the rear!
