From a stylistic standpoint, the 1993-1998 model years are standouts. Also, anything before 1993 will probably be getting long in the tooth as far as mileage goes. When checking out a candidate for purchase, the books and receipts are a bible...go over them thoroughly! If no books, then just keep on looking. There are plenty of fanatics out there that take incredible care of their cars and have the records to show for it...look for these people to buy from. If a turbo, make sure oil was changed at LEAST every 5k. Go with a 5 speed...check out the motor mounts...have the DI cassette checked...find a good Saab mechanic and pay him 2 hours of his time to give the car a good going over. There are jewels out there...it just takes longer to find them than the common Altima or Camry! Good luck...I'm still looking for that 'perfect' 1995-1997 Aero!
