Well, I currently have a 1996 Toyota Tercel and a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. Both were bought for utility first and foremost, and we got fun, value, reliability, resale, fuel economy, and other stuff as gravy. The Tercel is a high-mileage commuter vehicle, purchased especially to provide the highest gas mileage, most reliability, lowest TCO with the most *relative* comfort for your basic stripped-down subcompact car. My fiance works 75 miles away from the house, and carpools with one other guy. Point A to Point B vehicle is all we wanted. We drove everyone's comparable offerings, and the Honda Civic HX came in second place. We got a great deal on this particular Tercel as a reposession, so the lower price won it a place in our driveway. I thought the Civic was a bit pricey, but it did have more of the unimportant "luxury" items. The 98 Tacoma 4x4 was an upgrade from my 95.5 2WD 4 cylinder Tacoma which I loved dearly, but needed 4WD and a larger engine. Its an unwritten law, if you own an old house, you have to also own a truck :-D. My house was built in 1918, and rebuilt by *me* between the years of 1990 and the present. When I determined that I was tired of fixing my 1974 Luv truck, I test drove one of everyone's offerings in a new light duty truck also. The Tacoma won in every category. My 95.5 Tacoma hauled an incredible amount of building materials and rubble. It was also used to yank overgrown 90-year-old shrubbery out of the ground, and to move a rotted garage off its foundation. During its tour of duty, it was 100% reliable, affordable, and had great gas mileage. The newer 4WD one has a much easier life, it only hauls lawn and garden maintenance items, picks up whatever big toys I buy at Walmart or Lowes, and pulls my 18' pontoon boat, plus the occasional off-road adventure. I think it rates an "all of the above" on why I drive it. It gets me and whatever I haul wherever I'm going in style and comfort. :-) SherryB
