This is not scientific, nor an endorsement.
In 1986 my mother was looking at car's. She was eyeing the Fiero GT. I
tried to talk her into the Mazda RX-7. The RX-7 was about $5000.00 more.
She chose the Fiero GT.
Fast forward to 1998, shes looking to trade in her '86 Fiero I look at the
Blue Book value, and out of curiosity, I check the '86 RX-7. The Fiero is
worth about $800.00 more!
My conclusion from this is that in the end a used Japanese car is a just
used Japanese car. But American cars seem to become classics, no matter
how poor they were to begin with. (There's always some red neck who wants
your special, only 1287 made in lip stick Red with the optional do hicky and
simulated thrash on)
Seeing this, I would buy a 1999/2000 Countour SVO. The likely hood of this
keeping its value against any similarly priced Japanese car is very good.
Plus its fun to drive. And a very good new car value!
