Tom, I just got through troubleshooting a vacuum hose problem and needlessly removed the dash on my '88 900T. Like you though, I did need to do other work - I replaced the speedometer because the odometer had quit. Anyway, the stuff you are seeing from the vent is a kind of foam not unlike the stuff you buy at the hardware store to put around the windows of your house for insulation. That's what I replaced mine with. I was getting the same crap spraying from the vents, too. It's relatively cheap - two or three bucks for a 20 ft. roll. As far as the screeching noise, it could be from the vaccum line gang assembly not being on tight enough or the blower motor main bearing. Sorry I can't advise better. Good luck.
