Subject: Re: 900 fuel pump relay problems

Dear Andy / Surfsofa, When working properly the pump should make a faint buzzing sound but to be realy honest its more like a hissing sound. Any loud buzzing, whine or intermitance of the sound means its on the way out. The cheapest source is a breakers yard - Under £50.00 for a good one. There are several types depending on the year and fuel system. CI injection needs the high pressure version, LH uses a lower pressure pump but can be fitted with the pump from a CI system but not vice versa. Some later pumps had a dual pump system with one pump feeding another but I think this only applies to the LH system. The pump itself consists of a top fange mount the pump itself and a pickup. If you buy from a salvage yard you will probably get this all together. You can just buy a generic pump of the correct pressure and delivery rate and swop the top and bottom from your old unit try a fuel injection/autoelectrical specialist. Fitting is fairly straightforwards and detailed in the Haynes manual. For S/H try 'Twostroke to Turbo' in Hatfield or Startec in Woodgreen. All the best John
