Subject: Another AC question..

Anybody have any ideas? My 1987 900 Turbo's air conditioning works great, until it stops, then starts again! When it is working, it is silent and blows very cold air. Then, while driving, I will hear a continuous hiss/whoosh noise from the compressor, and warm air will blow. Generally I turn off the a/c at this point and let it rest. If I turn it on again 15 minutes or ? later it will be working fine until it hisses again. Now, one time I just left it on, and it cycled off and on like this several times, running for 15 minutes at first, then off and on with no regularity every 3,4,5 minutes or so. I recently (4000 miles ago) had the system charged and they said no leaks. The first time this happened it was a very hot day here in KC, and when I looked under the hood, I saw small smoke curls from the compressor belt/clutch. It is now slightly brown in color (the clutch). Any ideas? Is it a bad compressor or just clutch? And if it is a bad clutch, can it be changed without discharging the freon? Thanks in advance! Jason '87 900 Turbo, that red color.
