I have had the same problem with my 87 spg,there is an auxiliary air regulator on top of the motor towards the distributor with an electrical lead on top and two approx 1" hoses as well.If the hoses are leaking this will cause the eratic idle that you seem to have. Also if you are working on the regulator you may want to take the time to clean it at the same time,when it's removed use either a cleaner such as "gunk" to spray inside both holes where the two hoses attach. After a thorough cleaning spray in some wd-40 to lubricate it before re-installing. Hope this helps!
