I'm not sure if they come in a 17" (I'd be surprised if they didn't, but check http://www.tirerack.com or http://www.tires.com), but I LOVE my Michelin Arctic Alpins. They have very even wear and I expect to make it through my 3rd winter in Ottawa on them (so my season is probably longer than yours). They grip very well in snow and slush, and braking is surprisingly competent, even in icy conditions. I also didn't have any problems in 12 to 18" of unplowed snow going down my country road and up my driveway. Dry performance was good; I never really pushed them at all, but I would guess they're squirmier. Never noticed any noise, either. These are the only winters I've ever had, but I did a fair bit of research at the time. The Blizzaks apparently perform the same when new, but didn't wear evenly, and by the time you got halfway through the tread, it was a different compound that effectively made it an all-season. Yoko Guardex was also recommended, but I didn't like the tread pattern compared the Alpins. They were all pretty close in price. You could probably get them in a 16" mounted on steel wheels for the same price as 17s, by the time you unmount/mount/balance x 2 (fall and spring) x 2 (expect to get 2 seasons of use), and get more life out of them (hopefully 3 full seasons).
