When I brought my 900 back from germany I picked it up in Dallas Texas and drove it to Arizona. The only place in Europe it would ever overheat was on one very steep climb in Switzerland. I would usually stop at the reststop there for 20 minutes or so for a cooldown and snack anyway. Sometimes it would spit out hot coolent, so I would park in a uphill inclined space to prevent spills. In the Texas summer it was fine while driving, but overheating terribly every time I stopped for gas or food. It would not start for 20-30 minutes after I shut off the engine unless I poured several gallons of water over the engine and starter. 3-4 gallons of water usually cooled it enough to start. I think the overheating either caused some sort of safety switch to engage, or the starter to not engage until it cooled down. Later I checked the thermostat and it seemed to be fine and the radiator was not plugged up either. As I was always a cold climate driver before, I thought this was how newer Saabs acted in hot climates. After living with the condition for a couple of years I decided to buy a new thermostat anyway and tested it next to the old one. Both operated the same during testing. I put the new one in anyway and the overheating immedietly went away. Moral of the story - Replace the thermostat even if it tests good. If that does not do it then have the radiator boiled out. >I posted a few back but didn't get much response with respect to my Saab >which >won't start after I've been driving it in the hot climate and then try to >re-start it minutes thereafter.
