Let me elaborate: On the 900s (the 900 "classic") there are 2 radiator fans, both run by electric motors. The fan on the left runs when the A/C is running. In order for the A/C to run, you need the compressor to run, and you need the belt. So (indirectly) you need the belt for this fan to run. The fan on the right is controlled by a thermoswitch in the engine coolant line. With the A/C off (or broken) you don't need the left fan to run in order to keep the engine cool -- the right fan is sufficient.
