It feels *very* durable, and the LS model was rather luxurious too. Sure parts of the trim are beginning to show their age, and the radio no longer has great reception (the tape player works fine), but after nearly twenty years and (as of recently) two engines, I still *love* it. If I could only get her to part with it, I'd be a made man :) >I have excellent sources. Well please, share, I'm curious by nature. >I attribute it to companies being CHEAP. Yup. >> Having seen some of them, and owning a Ford, I'm not sure I find this >> terribly funny, stupid yes, uncommon no. > >So true, you've just got to admit it. I can think off the top of my head two recalls for the 89 Taurus. One was for the wagon (but this car seems to suffer from a demented remove the key at any time ignition), and one was the cat heat shield (rattled). And a few months ago the whole ignition system (I want to say coil pack) did wonderous things (related to a current class action suit againt Ford). Sloppy design sure, but I've heard and seen far worse quality in GM cars of this era from people that maintain their cars as carefully. For the 100k+ miles, it's been quite durable, and to me, strong bumpers speak more than an occasional (every few years *grin*) brain fart. >> Heh and when I was in my friend's 9000 Turbo, I was insanely jealous. > >I can easily understand why. And I think this was the one with the smaller engine (2.0L was it?). But then again she mentioned how much money was being dropped into repairs and the like, and my head spun. I'm pretty sure she took it to the dealer (we've had a GM/Saab dealer before GM and Saab were that close :^)) for service. Even after she drove it off the lot one time, that same day, something (she said some pulley, but that doesn't sound right) blew up. Their (her and her parent's) solution was to get a new 9-3. Hah. >HA!! You are too funny. Ew that recessed grille and single beam headlight, that interior front console dealie, and the mono wiper blade that looks like they just forgot one blade. YUCK, it was gimicky if anything. The new XJ sedans with their round dual beam headlights, monochrome grille (on the XJR) oh man, *so* much more stylish IMO. >I think that the fact there are very few American >> cars with that kind of mileage says two things: >> >> * The 70s and 80s were awful for American car manufactures > >Depends on what you classify as awful. Ehm. Aside from that "I'm white, but my name is Shaft the pimp" look gotten from the 70s land yachts, I can't think of anything positive out of that era. The Seville with the missing rear end? The compact Caddy? The Tempo? The Escort GT with rear drums? The K cars? Ewww. I'm afraid of my friend's K-car. The turbo whine sounds like something's wrong with the engine, and the whole car just shakes quite a bit and rattles when you touch anything. >> * Unless the car is exceptional, most people around here have no >> desire to keep such an old car > >OHHHH!! So you agree then that Saabs are an exceptional car? How could I not? I've got a thing for some of those funky European cars. Love the Peugeot 505 with the grinning hood, Saab 900; 9000, Audi 5000, and the more generic Jetta GLI and Passat (when they were angular). But does this mean I think the Taurus is an exceptionally wretched car? Judging by what I'm driving, no. And for an American car of that era it's damn nicely styled, and has a very useable interior (Can we say Pontiac 6000). But it sure is getting tough finding an easy to park spot for a car this size. P.S. What exactly is the SPG? - alex
