Subject: Re: Should I buy a Saab 9-3SE?

I, too, gave up an impractical convertible for a Saab, so perhaps I can contribute something useful here. I bought a '98 900 SE a year and a half ago, and have been wild about it the 23k miles I've driven it. I never thought that I would succeed in finding a car which is such a great combination of handling, speed, and practicality. Going from a convertible to a car with sub 7-second acceleration AND a 20+ cu. ft. trunk (with almost 50cu. ft with the rear seats down, who the hell needs an SUV?) will blow you away. I have had no reliability problems with the Saab so far. I have found it to be a trouble-free and extremely enjoyable car. I recall seeing a reliabilty report in Consumer Reports for the 1998 model year which confirmed that the niggling imperfections of the "94-'95 model year have been ironed out. If you visit The Saab Network bulletin board web page (www.saabnet.com/tsn.html), you will find it quite common to read of 15+ year old daily driver 900's that are still giving reliable service. With a set of snow tires on all four wheels, I was unable to find a hill steep enough (in my rather hilly town) to give my 900 pause. More than mere starting acceleration in the snow, the Saab gives you true peace of mind through its benevolent handing characteristics and good braking. The "seat-of-your-pants" road feel you get in a Saab lets you know exactly what the car is doing underneath you. While BMW has plenty of fans out there, I believe that you will be disappointed in the rear wheel drive car's snow handling as my friend was with his 328 w/traction control. From the snow perspective, you simply cannot beat having 60% of the car's weight over the drive wheels unless you have AWD (which is unnecessary in most situations). ---------- In article <936579963.12381nopsamworld.remarq.com>, snazzygal <lbarhamnopsamltranet.com> wrote: > I own a Miata so I'm totally spoiled by my reliable little > car. 100,000 miles and the first real repair was this past > spring— to the air conditioner.
