Greetings, Rejoice, for the progigal returns to the fold! I am a former SAAB devotee who has recently purchased an '87 9000 Turbo for my son. Whether or not _he_ actually gets to drive it or not will be determined by the answers I can obtain from you knowledgeable folks. I'm a former 850GT campaigner in rallies and gymkhana (primarily Europe) and was the very pleased owner of a brand new '72 99E here in the US (which I also rallied) and which gave me yeoman duty for 15 years, more than 300K miles and the eventual installation of a Turbo motor and 5 speed. (BTW, the last I heard this car is STILL running in NY state!) The arrival of 3 children (yes, we found out what was causing it) while we had the '72 caused us to search for a more practical vehicle for hauling them, us, the dogs, etc. and we turned to US iron for the many years that followed (forgive us). Last week, while on a visit to Boston, my son's Prelude was totalled in a collision with a Q-Tip in a Cadillac and we began the search for a replacement. One of my son's friends mentioned that he was replacing his daily runner for a newer car as he went off to college and we expressed interest in his "old" car, an '87 9000 Turbo with 196K miles. To make a long story short (yeah, I know, too late) we purchased said car for US $1500.00. The body is in excellent condition and it has received continuous maintenance by the same mechanic since new. It has new brakes, clutch, tires and the transmission (5 speed manual) was recently rebuilt. I've already determined the cures for many of the car's ills from all of the info I read on this list, primarily the cold start/stalling problem and some of the electrical faults. But I have a few questions I'd like to throw out and see what your thoughts are on them. 1) The left front wheel bearing and/or CV joint is making a low grinding noise. I haven't had a chance yet to dis-aasemble it to look, but which is the more common failure? I don't _think_ it's the differential, but I could deal with that also. 2) The on-board computer appears dead with no display evident. Any ideas on resurection? 3) Best source for rebuilt AC compressor? 4) Any general ideas/hints on areas that should be given particular attention as I set about cleaning and tightening under the hood? 5) What has everyone else done about the failing headliner and door inserts? Thanks for the attention and sorry for the bandwidth, James Medford, NJ USA
