Not sure that's entirely true. It's illegal to get *paid* to do it to someone else's car ($10,000 fine). But last time I checked, doing it to your own car wasn't a violation of any federal law. State laws vary. If you're in California, or in another state that mimics thier Hitlerian vehicle-inspection program (like MA, where I live :^( ), you're probably out of luck.
