Subject: Re: a (happy) Saab story

So far, I have put 1500 miles on my Viggen. Aside from a few minor problems, I am very satisfied with the car. The antenna had to be replaced due to poor reception & one of the sill covers has a slight gap (not flush with the body). The mechanic tried to adjust it but it still gaps a bit. The front spoiler is very low; you really have to watch those driveways & curbs.... the Saab mechanic scraped it on the lift ramp during the 1,000 mile service! I don't think this car will do very well in snow ( due to the spoiler) so this limits the utility of the car. When I open it up on the road, however, I soon forget about these minor foibles. The Viggen is very quick & fun to drive! The turbo thrust is different from my 85 SPG. With the Viggen, you have good low-end torque available on demand at almost any speed but the turbo thrust is more gradual than the SPG. With the SPG, you really feel the thrust when the turbo kicks in but you had to be at a certain RPM. With the Viggen, I don't feel the same 'kick' but the power is always there & not as dependent on RPM. My mechanic feels that the turbo boost could be increased but you have to be careful with warranty issues. The stereo is a HUGE improvement over the older Saabs! My Viggen story: some cocky, young punk in a Mitsubishi Eclipse comes up on my ass while I was doing 75MPH, so I kept my pace for about 1 minute to let him stew, then I took off & left him in the dust. The Viggen shot out to 100MPH in no time! I know, I know, but every once in a while you just gotta! John.
