Subject: 9-5 Pre-ignition?

I'm currently on my 3rd 9-5, this time a 99 model year variant. Compared to the previous 2, this one suffers from pre-ignition "knock" when accelerating from about 65mph until it reaches 70 mph then it doesn't knock anymore. The knock only occurs in that approx speed band. The car is an 2.0SE automatic. The car has now done 6000 miles, and the knocking is less than when it was new, and I have tried 98RON fuel which improves things over the standard 95RON. The only thing I can think it might be is that the engine management characteristics have been altered for the 99MY. On the previous 2 cars, there was a slight flat spot around 2000 rpm when accelerating hard, but that has gone on the 99 car. Minor tweaks I suspect, but could they have introduced the pre-ignition? The owners manual says that some pre-ignition is normal under heavy load/accel but this is quite noticeable (worrying the first time I heard it!) when compared to my previous 2 cars. Any thoughts? Am I being paranoid? Anyone else experience this with their car? Sound is most apparent, with window down, driving near Armco barriers (get best reflection of engine noise!). Simon Watkins
