Hmmm, ralphie, this sounds familiar... I guess your 9000 has driven a lot of miles already... The German ZF 4 speed trannies are wellknown for going south after a lot of miles. We had the same thing with our '89 9000CDi. First it took some time for the autogearbox to get into the right gear. Especially first gear. You could hear a cluck when it did. Then after a while, when the engine was hot, the trannie would just quit. On the german Autobahn the trannie was shifting down until it reached 1st gear. Then the engine would halt. The mechanic told us to put a new or revised trannie into the car. And so we did. Be prepared to pay a lot of money for this. I do not know in which part of the autotrannie this fault is, but maybe one of the mechanical minded Saabgods in this newsgroup can shed a light on the problem...
