These days shims are harder to come by. Dealers that have been around awhile usually have them, but some of the newer ones may not (it's not listed on the EPC, have to look on old microfiche for part numbers). You can either purchase a shim kit, which contains a whole assortment of the different shim sizes. Nice to have if you're maintaining a couple of 8valves, but maybe not as practical if you've just got one to do. ..or you can sit down with a micrometer, a calculator or slide rule or whatever and calculate the shim sizes you need, then tell the parts guy and he'll order them for you. Sure you could exchange them from valve to valve if you're really lucky, but that's only if you've got the right sizes on hand. There's also a cheater table in section 2 (the factory manual 2:Basic Engine) if you have access to a set of factory manuals. best of luck, -SAABhuman
