It might be coming from a belt-driven accessory just behind the firewall (alternator, AC compressor, water pump, PS pump). You can isolate one of these sounds pretty quickly by opening the hood and using a broom handle as a stethoscope -- press one end against the gadget and the other end against your ear. This will find a noisy bearing, etc. tout suite. Also good for listening to your camshaft bearings, timing chain, valve lifters...
