Subject: turboing without APC

I have recently been running my 900T16 with the APC box unplugged - I am obviously only getting basic boost (1/2 way into the red at about .4 bar) but the car seems to be much more responsive with less lag and pulls strongly and smoothly from just just over 2000rpm. Does anyone know why the APC system holds back at low boost as the basic test procedure for the system as described in the Hynes manual suggests the valve should be opperating at .5bar at 2000rpm. I had previously retarded the boost to about .7bar via the P pot on the box as at nearly 15 years and 185000 miles the gear box could do with some sympathy (no terminal symptoms yet though). Most of my driving is in central London and improved drivability at the expense absolute power is a worthwhile trade off. Here are some questions before I do more un-APC motoring; How much boost can I safley run via just the actuator on UK 95ron petrol? Does it make a difference if the pressure line to the actuator comes from the compressor housing or from the manifold ? There seem to be more of these multi electrode-plugs on the market - anyone tried them in the T16 or am I still better off sticking to NGK BCP7EV ? Johann
