It is well worth their while in parts alone to push the issue I would say that they are just seeing how far you will go Most solicitors will give you an introductory appointment free where they will explain if they think you have a case and how much it will cost you for them to write the dealer a scary letter. You can take it or leave it without paying a cent. Just ring the office and ask if they charge for the first consultation. Alternatively, you could seek other courses of mediation first. If you are insured, ring up your insurance company and discuss it with them. They should have some good advice. Also, see if your Government has a consumer watchdog or fair trading Department that will advise you for free and possibly mediate. (Many do!). If the dealer is a licenced member of a dealers/repairers association or quality assurance organisation, contact them as well. These associations exist to give their members credability by providing the consumer with a dispute resolution framework. From what you have said, I don't think they have much of a leg to stand on unless they can show good reason why they suspect you of giving the car a hard time. There is more evidence of their negligence than yours. Push the issue and push it hard but remember, even if you haven't so far, stay cool and calm in your dealings with them. Any nastiness is more powerful when conveyed by others who represent you.
