Dear Malcolm, The timing chain tensioner is screwed into the head on the inlet side near the alternator. Its quite easy to see which type you have without taking anything apart - the old one is a large flat bolt (27mm) and the later one has an offset smaller bolt in the middle. By the way if you do a search on Saabnet there is an article in a past posting which is taken out of the official workshop manual and it describes in detail how to go about replacing the chain together with a list of Saab tools.
