As an addendum to this, I just replaced all the shocks this weekend. The donuts were part of the problem, but the big problem turned out to be the hole in the front-pillar which the shock piston goes through - these had enlarged so much that the rubber donuts were getting pulled through the hole & shredded. The car has 400K on it, so I'm not too surprised that this happened. I'll probably end up welding some washers on the frame, but has anybody else run into this? Any recommended fixes?
