Subject: Re: Creaking front suspension

Hi, I had the same "creaking" problem on my 1983 900 for about a year, until I finally decided to do something about it this summer. I thought that it was the pivot points between the lower or upper wishbone and the chassis, but dismantling/reconditioning the lower wishbone pivots and temporarily loosening the nuts securing the longitudinal bolts on the upper wishbone - had no effect whatsoever. Lower kingpin balljoint (securing wheel knuckle to lower wishbone) had been replaced recently, so it was not a suspect. When I replaced the _upper_ kingpin balljoint (remembering first to put wood blocks between the bottom of the upper wishbone and the chassis before raising the car), the problem disappeared. Turned out that the balljoint had dried out and rusted. Happy end to a long irritating story. The deciding clue for me was noticing that the creaking also occurred when turning the steering wheel slightly, with the car at a complete standstill. If it had been the wishbones creaking, they likely wouldn't have made noise just by me turning the steering wheel. Hope my experience gives you some ideas of what to try next. Good luck. // Robert John Mason wrote: > I have a 1989 classic 900T five door and on cold mornings the front > suspension "creaks".
