In a word, No. I had an 87 900S 16V and currently drive an 87 9000S 16V.
The cover plate helps to keep dirt out of the plug area, as well as
protect the plug wires. Removing the cover will not cool things off. If
you want to check something, if yours is a non turbo, you should have a
plastic valve in your valve cover with hoses going to the throttle body.
Pull the hoses and pull the vavle out. I sprayed Berryman B-12 Chemtool
through mine a couple of months ago. I was amazed at the chunks that
came out, and how much cooler my engine ran afterwards. You may also
want to check hoses on your throttle body for looseness. I put clamps on
mine and difference was amazing.
