i'm in school here in d.c. and was wondering who might be considered a "trustworthy" mechanic for my car. has anyone had any good and/or bad experiences to speak of? (i've heard that scandinavian imports is pretty good)? while i've got you... i have an '89 900 turbo with one small problem and one impending large problem... 1) what's the best way to replace the muffler? i've got a "slice" in mine and i wasn't sure if i need to get a muffler from the dealer, or midas or if i should order it somewhere and have a random garage put it on. 2) my shifting is, "loose". the car doesn't grind, doesn't slip out of gear, and doesn't "whine" at highway speeds. but it is difficult to find the gears and once you're in gear there's a lot of "play" in the stick. when going into all the gears you can "feel" it kind of hit something on the way in. i'm totally ignorant when it comes to transmissions. i was wondering if the problem could be between the stick and the tranny, or are all the problems confined to the transmission. i heard that the "forks" are likely worn but i'm not exactly sure how the entire mechanism works and my attempts at learning about the transmission have been futile. if anyone has any advice i'd really appreciate it. i'm assuming the best thing to do is to bring it somewhere, let them drive it and then let them tell me i need 2 grand in repairs, at which point i clutch my chest and hit the ground ;-] thanks again, jim leone leone123nopsamigy.net
