Originally I got my license in Connecticut and then also did some driving in New York State. In my memory, it seemed to me that passing on the right was quite a serious thing that one should really try to avoid. I remember taking trips of a hundred miles or more, and that would be an ongoing concern the whole trip. I haven't once seen someone worry about it or do anything about it here. Now, I don't know what other factors might be involved (such as me simply not getting caught, and some local conventions that I just don't get as to, generally, what the lanes are "for"). I respect that some people want to do 65 or even a little less, and that's it. What I don't respect is their decision to do this in the passing lane. Then they will tell you that you "shouldn't" want to go any faster than that anyway. They are wrong to presume to play cop. That is the cop's job. I have one friend who is a lifelong resident here and she asked me why people sometimes flash their lights in her rearview mirror. Now, I don't think she's planting herself in the fast lane, but I just had to smile to myself that she wouldn't even *know*. So, I told her that people were asking her to get the hell out of the way. God, I don't mind them ticketing me for speeding, but at least ticket the fuckers who don't follow the OTHER rules. I think that they don't ticket passing on the right here as much because they know that they have failed to enforce the failure to yield issues, and so now people are stuck passing on the right. But that's just my guess. jl >> 75+ and they'll light you up, if they clock it. The raised limit areas >that are 65, people still go 75 - even with the "no tolerance" threats >that going above 65 in a 65 area will get you nailed.
